Our Philosophy

Rooted in the Land. Refined by Baron & Picard.

Heritage is our future

Nestled in the former hunting grounds of Richard the Lionheart, we proudly continue the winemaking tradition of the Cahors region, honoring a legacy that stretches back to the Roman Empire.

Our vineyards are dedicated to AOP-certified Malbec, prized for its distinctive character. Following strict organic standards, we carefully age hand-selected wines in barrels, staying true to time-honored methods. Rather than focusing on quantity, we cultivate vines over 40 years old, which cover nine of our eleven hectares.

This approach gives our wines their robust, complex personality – a true reflection of the region’s heritage. At Château La Gineste, quality, tradition, and respect for the vineyard remain at the heart of everything we do.

Second Terrace

The Terroir

The Terroir of Cahors is shaped by three ancient river terraces, each defined by its unique geological composition. Château la Gineste is situated predominantly on the second terrace — a prized location where limestone and clay dominate the subsoil. These mineral-rich layers, formed over millennia, contribute to the structure, freshness, and complexity of our wines. The topography and natural drainage of this terrace offer ideal conditions for Malbec, allowing it to fully express the identity of its origin.

The Soil and Root Dynamic

Our vines, planted in the 1980s, have developed exceptionally deep root systems — a direct result of our soil management philosophy. Companion plants such as clover, alfalfa, and saltpetre vetch compete for nutrients in the upper layers of the soil. This natural competition encourages the vines to push their roots deeper in search of sustenance. In doing so, they reach the lower strata rich in limestone and clay, which play a vital role in the concentration, minerality, and balance found in each bottle of Château la Gineste wine.

work in the vineyard

The vines are pruned using the single guyot method. This means that there is a short root and a long strech on the vine. The last year's strech is cut off and a new one is wrapped around the wire. The fruit branch closest to the root is left on and shortened to 6 -12 eyes. Afterwards it is wrapped around the lowest wire. Every year in July, a green harvest or thinning takes place. When thinning, the grapes are deliberately reduced. This reduction of grapes on a vine causes the remaining grapes to have a more intense and better quality, as they receive more nutrients. As protection against various external influences, we use a Brodeaux mixture with well thought-out copper management.

The Vinification

After the grapes are brought to theChâteau and sorted they are put into vats. The most and grapes are kept in the vats together and rotated daily to ensure a good blend. The vinification takes place at 28°C to ensure a very gentle extraction of the tannins. After a successful vinification the malolactic fermentation takes place either in vats or oak barrels, depending on the different wines. After the successful ageing of the wine it is bottled without filtration at the Château.

Every bottle has a story. Watch it unfold.
